On the evening of Oct. 11, Parker was walking near the town of Aviemore with her two dogs, Roo and Carver, when they were all struck by a gray Peugeot 207, said Police Scotland, which added the driver, a 20-year-old, was not hurt.

The police also noted that emergency responders were present, but Parker and her dogs died at the scene.

Authorities said they are continuing to look into what happened and asked that anyone with information about the incident to contact them.

Parker’s family shared a statement about their loss through Police Scotland: “We are so devastated by the tragic loss of Emilie and her beloved dogs, Roo and Carver. Emilie moved with her dogs to Dundee from Colorado, USA, in July of this year, to pursue her Masters in Social Work at the University of Dundee, with which she dreamed to help serve the underserved communities of the world.”The family described Parker as “smart, beautiful” and “courageous” — a person who loved the outdoors.
“You could find her with her pups, biking, hiking, rafting, skiing, dog sledding or crafting whenever she wasn’t working or studying,” they added.
“She was an amazing sister, daughter, granddaughter, niece, dog mom, and friend to so many who are going [to] miss her so deeply. The world lost an amazing person, and her loss is felt by so many who loved her. Rest in peace Emilie and we will meet again in another life,” Parker’s family concluded their statement.

Police Scotland Sgt. Calum MacAulay said in a press statement: “Our thoughts remain with the family of Emilie. They have asked for privacy at what is a very difficult time.”
In a statement shared with PEOPLE, a spokesperson for the University of Dundee said: “This is tragic news which has shocked us all and our thoughts are with Emilie’s family and friends, to whom we are offering support at this extremely difficult time.”
