81-year-old woman dead after fatal crash in Welland: Niagara police Investigating….

An 81-year-old woman is dead after a crash in Welland, Ont., Wednesday afternoon, according to Niagara police.

Investigators say a Chevy Trax SUV came together with a Chevy Silverado pickup around noon Wednesday in the area of Prince Charles Drive and Fitch Street.The woman was a passenger in the Trax and died at the scene after the vehicle hit a pole.

It’s believed the SUV, driven by an 83-year-old man, attempted to make a right-hand turn onto Prince Charles Drive when it collided with the Silverado navigated by a 55-year-old man, police say.

St. Catharines, Ontario – April 19, 2025 — A tragic wrong-way collision on Highway 406 near St. Catharines has left two people dead and another seriously injured, marking a heartbreaking moment for the Niagara region.

According to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the crash occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning when a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes collided head-on with another vehicle near the Glendale Avenue interchange.

Emergency crews arrived on the scene shortly after 1:30 a.m. and found a chaotic and devastating situation. The vehicle traveling correctly in the northbound lanes caught fire as a result of the impact. Both occupants of that vehicle, a man and a woman, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.

The driver of the wrong-way vehicle, a 24-year-old man from Welland, survived the collision but sustained serious injuries. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he remains under medical supervision. Authorities suspect impairment may have been a factor in the crash and are continuing their investigation. Charges are expected.

“The nature of this crash and the circumstances surrounding it are truly tragic,” said OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt in a public statement. “We believe impaired driving may have contributed, and we are working to determine exactly what happened.”

Highway 406 was closed for several hours Saturday morning as collision reconstruction specialists worked the scene. All lanes were reopened by approximately 7:30 a.m.

Residents in the Niagara region are expressing grief and frustration as this incident marks yet another serious collision on a highway that has seen its share of traffic tragedies in recent years. Road safety advocates are once again urging drivers to remain vigilant and never drive impaired.
