28 Injured, 1 Critically, After Tour Bus Flips on the Way to Niagara Falls On Going Investigation

Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter told reporters in a press conference the incident occurred on Interstate 490 near Union Street in Chili.Authorities said that the bus bound for Niagara Falls had left New York City around midnight and was making stops along the way.

Baxter told reporters that officials responded to a crash around 7 a.m. local time.
Upon arrival, they found the flipped-over bus with passengers trapped inside and others walking along the interstate in a state of confusion.
“Getting people off the bus was a difficult task by everybody involved,” the sheriff said.

“We are now coordinating with families at the hospitals to make sure their loved ones know where they are and are accounted for and understand where they can meet up with them,” Baxter told reporters.

Authorities said that the bus driver has been cooperative, adding that at this time, drugs or alcohol are not believed to be factors in the crash.An investigation is ongoing. PEOPLE has reached out to the sheriff’s office for comment.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul issued a statement saying that she joins “the people of New York in praying for the well-being of all involved in this serious incident and am deeply grateful for the heroic efforts of our first responders.”

St. Catharines, Ontario – April 19, 2025 — A tragic wrong-way collision on Highway 406 near St. Catharines has left two people dead and another seriously injured, marking a heartbreaking moment for the Niagara region.
According to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the crash occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning when a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes collided head-on with another vehicle near the Glendale Avenue interchange.
Emergency crews arrived on the scene shortly after 1:30 a.m. and found a chaotic and devastating situation. The vehicle traveling correctly in the northbound lanes caught fire as a result of the impact. Both occupants of that vehicle, a man and a woman, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
The driver of the wrong-way vehicle, a 24-year-old man from Welland, survived the collision but sustained serious injuries. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he remains under medical supervision. Authorities suspect impairment may have been a factor in the crash and are continuing their investigation. Charges are expected.
“The nature of this crash and the circumstances surrounding it are truly tragic,” said OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt in a public statement. “We believe impaired driving may have contributed, and we are working to determine exactly what happened.”
Highway 406 was closed for several hours Saturday morning as collision reconstruction specialists worked the scene. All lanes were reopened by approximately 7:30 a.m.
Residents in the Niagara region are expressing grief and frustration as this incident marks yet another serious collision on a highway that has seen its share of traffic tragedies in recent years. Road safety advocates are once again urging drivers to remain vigilant and never drive impaired.
