Allegiant Air has faced heightened scrutiny over its safety practices in recent years. A 2018 CBS “60 Minutes” investigation revealed that between January 1, 2016, and October 31, 2017, the airline experienced over 100 serious mechanical incidents, including mid-air engine failures, smoke in the cabin, rapid descents, flight control malfunctions, hydraulic leaks, and aborted takeoffs. Public records indicated that Allegiant’s aircraft were nearly 3.5 times more likely to have mid-air breakdowns compared to major carriers like American, United, Delta, JetBlue, and Spirit .
In response to these findings, Senators Edward Markey and Richard Blumenthal demanded answers from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regarding alleged safety lapses at Allegiant. They highlighted concerns about the FAA’s enforcement practices and called for improved oversight to ensure passenger safety .
Allegiant Air defended its safety record, stating that many of the incidents involved its older MD-80 aircraft, which have since been replaced with newer Airbus A320 family planes. The airline emphasized its compliance with FAA regulations and participation in voluntary safety programs .

In addition to safety issues, Allegiant Air is grappling with labor disputes involving its pilots. Pilots, represented by Teamsters Local 2118, have been in contract negotiations with the airline for nearly four years. They are seeking higher pay, improved benefits, and better work-life balance. Pilots have organized picket lines at various airports, including Provo, Utah, to draw attention to their demands .
