Girl 8 Years Old Dies On United Airlines Flight
In June 2024, a tragic incident occurred aboard a SkyWest Airlines flight operating as United Express, resulting in the untimely death of 8-year-old Sydney Weston from Carl Junction, Missouri. Sydney was traveling with her family from Joplin, Missouri, to Chicago, Illinois, for a vacation when she suddenly became ill and unresponsive during the flight. Despite immediate assistance from flight personnel and emergency responders upon an emergency landing in Peoria, Illinois, Sydney was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
An autopsy conducted by Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood determined that Sydney’s death was due to complications from chronic primary adrenalitis, also known as Addison’s disease, in the context of multiple infections, including strep and enterovirus. Further findings indicated that Sydney had duodenitis (inflammation of the small intestine) and thyroiditis (inflammation of the thyroid gland), suggesting an underlying autoimmune disorder. Autoimmune disorders occur when the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissues, disrupting normal bodily functions.
Sydney was remembered by her family for her infectious joy and love for life. She was eagerly anticipating her ninth birthday, with plans for a skating party, and looked forward to family vacations and activities such as visiting the Missouri amusement park Silver Dollar City and listening to Taylor Swift’s song “Karma.” Her family expressed profound grief, stating, “She will forever be remembered for the happiness she brought to every single person she encountered.”
In response to the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign was established to assist the Weston family with funeral expenses, reflecting the community’s support during their time of loss.
