CBC NewsA St. Catharines man is charged with attempted murder following a stabbing and standoff with police that shut down the QEW on Sunday night.

Police were called to a disturbance near Jubilee Drive and Redhaven Crescent in Niagara Falls just after 6 p.m. and say officers found a woman in her 20s with a serious stab wound.

The woman was taken to an area hospital before being airlifted to on out of town hospital for further care, according to police.Investigators say a male suspect was seen leaving the area in a red Kia.

Police say he drove to the Garden City Skyway where he was involved in a collision. The man then left the car and a standoff with police began, states a media release.

The QEW was closed in both directions while officers with multiple units, including the crisis negotiators and the domestic violence unit were called in.

The man was arrested at 2 a.m.

Police say the incident was targeted. A 37-year-old from St. Catharines is charged with criminal harassment and attempted murder.

He was taken to hospital to be treated for injuries police say happened before they became involved.

The highway was completely reopened around 3:40 a.m.
