Man charged with attempted murder in Niagara Falls crash..Four People Hospitalised

Police in Niagara Region have charged a man with three counts of attempted murder in connection with a car crash in Niagara Falls last year which they say was intentional.

Investigators previously said the Nov. 9 collision at Kalar and Montrose roads happened when a 52-year-old man driving a Chevrolet Equinox collided head-on with a Jeep Compass being driven by a 63-year-old womaBoth drivers were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, but survived.

The 63-year-old woman had two female passengers in their 60s in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Neither of them was seriously injured.

On Thursday, police announced that they have now charged the driver of the Equinox, 52-year-old Todd Williston from Niagara Falls, with three counts of dangerous operation causing bodily harm and three counts of attempted murder.

Police confirmed to CTV News Toronto that while Williston did not know the three people in the Jeep Compass, their investigation revealed the crash was allegedly caused with intent. They did not indicate what the motive might have been.

Williston is being held in custody pending a bail hearing on Jan. 31.

St. Catharines, Ontario – April 19, 2025 — A tragic wrong-way collision on Highway 406 near St. Catharines has left two people dead and another seriously injured, marking a heartbreaking moment for the Niagara region.

According to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the crash occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning when a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes collided head-on with another vehicle near the Glendale Avenue interchange.

Emergency crews arrived on the scene shortly after 1:30 a.m. and found a chaotic and devastating situation. The vehicle traveling correctly in the northbound lanes caught fire as a result of the impact. Both occupants of that vehicle, a man and a woman, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.

The driver of the wrong-way vehicle, a 24-year-old man from Welland, survived the collision but sustained serious injuries. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he remains under medical supervision. Authorities suspect impairment may have been a factor in the crash and are continuing their investigation. Charges are expected.

“The nature of this crash and the circumstances surrounding it are truly tragic,” said OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt in a public statement. “We believe impaired driving may have contributed, and we are working to determine exactly what happened.”

Highway 406 was closed for several hours Saturday morning as collision reconstruction specialists worked the scene. All lanes were reopened by approximately 7:30 a.m.

Residents in the Niagara region are expressing grief and frustration as this incident marks yet another serious collision on a highway that has seen its share of traffic tragedies in recent years. Road safety advocates are once again urging drivers to remain vigilant and never drive impaired.
