COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – Those in Colorado Springs are offering their support and condolences for those impacted by the tragic plane crash in Washington DC.

11 News reached out to the Colorado Springs Airport about how they share their airspace with the nearby military bases, Peterson Space Force Base and Fort Carson. They say they manage the building and everything on the ground but the airspace is managed by the Air Traffic Control Tower. They say communication and coordination are key for the safety of everyone involved.

“Our hearts are with the passengers, crew, military personnel, and everyone impacted by this devastating event, including our colleagues at Reagan National as they navigate this challenging time.”That was part of the statements released by the Colorado Springs Airport following the crash between an American Airlines flight and a black hawk helicopter Wednesday night. US Figure Skating released a statement saying in part quote:

“We are devastated by this unspeakable tragedy and hold the victims’ families closely in our hearts.”

In 1991 the Pikes Peak region dealt with our own airline tragedy when United Airlines Flight 585 crashed killing all 25 people aboard near the Colorado Springs Airport not far from a neighborhood in Security-Widefield.

A memorial still stands, honoring those who died.

Mayor Yemi Mobolade made a statement on the crash in DC earlier today saying in part quote:

“Our city is heartbroken regarding the plane crash near Washington, DC. To all the family and friends of victims, we grieve with you in this devastating loss.”

The US Olympic and Paralympic Museum also released a statement saying they are deeply saddened by the tragic plane crash and the loss of so many lives including members of the figure skating community.
