Police: Colorado Springs man hit and kills pedestrian, tries to use small child as shield to prevent arrest
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – A man is facing a slew of charges after police say he hit and killed a pedestrian, sped away from the scene, and then tried to use a child to prevent being arrested.
The deadly collision happened at South Circle and Airport just after midnight Tuesday. Police say the victim was crossing the street when the suspect came barreling up South Circle and hit them.
The suspect was allegedly speeding at the time and kept going after the crash. The victim, later identified as 28-year-old Patrick McCarthy, died before officers got on scene.
Officers were able to get suspect information and located him a short time later at a home in the 2500 block of East Pikes Peak, about a mile from the crash scene.The suspect … attempted to use a small child as a shield when officers attempted to arrest him,” a CSPD lieutenant said, not elaborating further.
After taking 30-year-old Dominic Rodriguez into custody, police say they learned he was already wanted on a felony warrant. He now faces that charge, along hit and run involving death, vehicular homicide – reckless driving, child abuse (non-injury), and reckless endangerment.
