‘Police incident’ shuts down New Westminster street

In recent months, New Westminster has experienced several significant incidents that have led to street closures, impacting traffic flow and raising safety concerns among residents.

Two notable events include a fatal pedestrian collision on McBride Boulevard and a serious commercial truck accident on Stewardson Way.

Fatal Pedestrian Collision on McBride Boulevard

On December 18, 2024, a tragic incident occurred on McBride Boulevard near Queen’s Park, resulting in the death of a pedestrian.

The collision led to the closure of McBride Boulevard in both directions between 6th Avenue and Memorial Drive around 6:30 a.m., causing significant traffic disruptions, especially for commuters attempting to access the northbound lanes of the Pattullo Bridge to Surrey.

The New Westminster Police Department (NWPD) reported that the driver involved remained at the scene, and the Major Crime Unit, along with the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Services Unit, took charge of the investigation.

Sergeant Andrew Leaver of the NWPD stated, “All the contributing factors of this incident are still under investigation.”

The road remained closed for several hours as officers gathered evidence to determine the causes of the collision
