Francisco N. was working on an industrial air conditioning unit in Los Mochis, Sinaloa in Mexico, on Tuesday when the tragedy occurred.
At first, the video appears to be capturing a routine service procedure on the air conditioner, positioned out of frame.
In the first 30 seconds, the engineer appears to be assessing his area, before setting up for the job ahead of him.
Just about one story up from the ground, he reaches down to pull up his aluminum ladder.
Once he has the ladder in hand, the man works to maneuver it to a spot where he can access the working space on the next story.Standing on a ledge that separates the balcony from the ground below, he begins swinging the ladder over the glass and metal short railing when disaster strikes.
As the worker swings the ladder over the ledge, the metal of the ladder connects with the metal of the short railing, likely closing an electrical circuit.
By closing this circuit, all the electrical output from the electricity source the ladder came into contact with was released.
Unfortunately, by having the ladder in his hand, the engineer became a part of that circuit, allowing all of the electricity to move through himself as well.The average central air conditioner unit puts out between 3000 and 3500 watts; comparatively, the typical household outlet puts out between 800 or 2400 watts.
Within seconds the man’s hip, arm, and head quickly burst into flames as blue sparks fly off of the metal contact point and a bright burst of light follows.
Immediately after the contact is made between the metal ladder and metal railing, the man goes stiff as a board.
Because the muscles in the human body function through a series of electrical signals, when a person is electrocuted it is common that nearly all of the muscles in their body contract, resulting in a visible stiffness.It is this fact that can make electrocution so dangerous.
Aside from the potential for both internal and external burns, the shock from electrocution can disturb the electrical signals in the heart, causing its movement to become irregular or stop altogether.After that final burst of energy throws off a splash of light, the man, having already gone stiff from the electrocution falls backward off the ledge, the ladder following after him.
On his way to the ground, the worker also lands straight on top of telephone and power lines before hitting the ground, evident by the wire’s violent bouncing upon his fall.
Witnesses describe the moment Fransico hit the ground as a “sickening bounce” before he remained face down while paramedics arrived.
The worker sustained second and third-degree burns, multiple fractures, and a head injury from both the initial electrocution and the following plummet to the ground.While it might seem like a freak occurrence, the odds of being electrocuted within a lifetime are 1 in 15,300, and the potential sources are often overlooked.
